The Man and the Birds

PAUL HARVEY’S CHRISTMAS STORY; “THE MAN AND THE BIRDS”
By PAUL HARVEY, ABC RADIO
Dec 24, 2004, 01:57
Unable to trace its proper parentage, I have designated this as my Christmas Story of the Man and the Birds. You know, THE Christmas Story, the God born a man in a manger and all that escapes some moderns, mostly, I think, because they seek complex answers to their questions and this one is so utterly simple. So for the cynics and the skeptics and the unconvinced I submit a modern parable.
Now the man to whom I’m going to introduce you was not a scrooge, he was a kind, decent, mostly good man. Generous to his family, upright in his dealings with other men. But he just didn’t believe all that incarnation stuff which the churches proclaim at Christmas Time. It just didn’t make sense and he was too honest to pretend otherwise. He just couldn’t swallow the Jesus Story, about God coming to Earth as a man. “I’m truly sorry to distress you,” he told his wife, “but I’m not going with you to church this Christmas Eve.” He said he’d feel like a hypocrite. That he’d much rather just stay at home, but that he would wait up for them. And so he stayed and they went to the midnight service.
Shortly after the family drove away in the car, snow began to fall. He went to the window to watch the flurries getting heavier and heavier and then went back to his fireside chair and began to read his newspaper. Minutes later he was startled by a thudding sound. Then another, and then another. Sort of a thump or a thud. At first he thought someone must be throwing snowballs against his living room window. But when he went to the front door to investigate he found a flock of birds huddled miserably in the snow. They’d been caught in the storm and, in a desperate search for shelter, had tried to fly through his large landscape window.
Well, he couldn’t let the poor creatures lie there and freeze, so he remembered the barn where his children stabled their pony. That would provide a warm shelter, if he could direct the birds to it. Quickly he put on a coat, galoshes, tramped through the deepening snow to the barn. He opened the doors wide and turned on a light, but the birds did not come in. He figured food would entice them in. So he hurried back to the house, fetched bread crumbs, sprinkled them on the snow, making a trail to the yellow-lighted wide open doorway of the stable. But to his dismay, the birds ignored the bread crumbs, and continued to flap around helplessly in the snow. He tried catching them. He tried shooing them into the barn by walking around them waving his arms. Instead, they scattered in every direction, except into the warm, lighted barn.
And then, he realized, that they were afraid of him. To them, he reasoned, I am a strange and terrifying creature. If only I could think of some way to let them know that they can trust me. That I am not trying to hurt them, but to help them. But how? Because any move he made tended to frighten them, confuse them. They just would not follow. They would not be led or shooed because they feared him. “If only I could be a bird,” he thought to himself, “and mingle with them and speak their language. Then I could tell them not to be afraid. Then I could show them the way to safe, warm …to the safe warm barn. But I would have to be one of them so they could see, and hear and understand.”
At that moment the church bells began to ring. The sound reached his ears above the sounds of the wind. And he stood there listening to the bells – Adeste Fidelis – listening to the bells pealing the glad tidings of Christmas. And he sank to his knees in the snow.

What we can learn from children!

Kid's have so much to teach us! I think that is why we need to try and spend some time with a kid every week or every day ( if you could be so lucky ). They just see the world differently than we do, is that good?  Yes, because look how happy they are! Couldn't we all be so blessed... to feel that happy every day!

Good Night dear friends!

Footprints in the snow!

I love getting Christmas cards in the mail! I know that seems almost unheard of now a days, but I do!
I love sending Christmas cards out too! Jeff says that the Postal Service will never go under, as long as I am alive!
One of the sweet Christmas cards I got this year, had this beautiful Christmas poem in it! Thought I would share it with you tonight. It is late and I will catch up on my weekend tomorrow!

Good Night dear friends!

It's Friday!

It's Friday and I only have one more day left. Kai came upstairs with me while I was getting ready this morning and decided he wanted to do his eyelashes like Nana! He is just too cute!

Then we went to Target and it was so cold outside and there was even snow flurries. I can't believe this is Texas weather. Poor Kai needed a hot chocolate to keep him warm in the store!

Then we went and had Pedicures, we haven't done those since Lauren's weedding. I would love to tell you that this photo was a photo of our feet...but it isn't ! :)
I guess we thought if we had pedicures that we would force the weather
 to change!

It was so cold tonight that we felt like we should  go eat Pho and then come back and watch a movie.

So we just snuggled up with a good movie Big Hero 6, then got our snacks and blankets and we snuggled down for the night.

I am going to miss this bunch, how I wish we didn't live so far apart!

It's a pillowcase kind of day!

Sometimes-you-will-never-know-the-value-of-a-moment-until-it-becomes-a-memory.jpg 590×590 pixels

How fun to wake up to a blanket of snow on the ground, just a dusting but still ..it is SNOW! Well, it looks like we just moved in, or that we are moving out...with all the boxes all over the house.
I was able to tutor again with this cute girl today. It was a Pillowcase type of day, she loved them. We even made our own pillows for the travel size pillowcase.
We also were able to take out one of Lee's good friend to dinner tonight. What a great kid he is. I am so grateful that my kids have such amzing friends, who have become a part of our family during their years.
It was a beautiful sunny... but a very cold day!

Black Friday Shopping!

Today Lee headed back home and Jeff and I had a great day shopping all the Black Friday Sales. Our main search was for the Perfect Christmas Tree. The artifical one that we have had for the last 7 years finally bit the dust last year. We hoped today since it was Black friday, we would be able to find just the right one. It was the perfect day to find one too, since every store had all there Christmas music playing throughout the store and today as you can see out the window of the store ...was the first snow of the year! It wasn't much and it didn't last long but...it made for a perfect Christmas shopping day!
Grateful to spend with my best friend!
I am so grateful also to be able to say...Merry Christmas dear friends and Good Night!

True G.R.I.T.S.

Well, we have about 6 inches of snow outside and it is still falling. I have hot water in the crockpot which is all ready for Hot Chocolate. I have in the other crock pot Chicken’s and Dumplings. And then a huge pot of Pinto Beans and Ham on the stove simmering. Now you can probably tell by this menu that I am a True G.R.I.T.S. ( Girl raised in the South ). The funny part is, Jeff is looking at me wondering who in the world is going to eat all this food. I know, I keep forgetting it is just us two, oh how I miss my kids! There is just something about a Snow Storm that makes me want to prepare ….just in case the neighborhood needed some help! Smile

I have done that since the kids were little, when the weather gets bad outside…I start cooking. Old habits are hard to break I guess! Oh well, unless a cold and hungry stranger comes knocking at our door to come eat, I guess I will just freeze some of it. I guess being prepared is better than NOT being prepared!

I received an email from a dear friend of mine tonight, and she reiterated what some other Empty Nesters have told me. That having your kids leave is really hard and it really hurts, but only because that meant I really loved my kids. She also reminded me that it will come and go in waves…since two of my kids have already left home earlier and now are married, I understand what she means. Still knowing that they are still only a phone call or an email away helps. How grateful I need to be that we do love each other and miss each other. Many families don’t have that.

So tonight I actually went to my sewing room and created something. It felt good, I need to do more of that. Plus, I need to remember we G.R.I.T.S. ( southern girls ) are tough, I need to toughen up and keep moving, because if you aren’t moving, then you are actually going backwards…so true. Gotta go and put the stuff in the freezer before I go to bed!

Good night dear friends!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Today started out early, when Lee woke us up and said it was snowing outside( I don't think we ever, out grow the excitement for snow, and especially on a holiday). Then around 9:00 Lauren and I got the turkey ready and going...you know the rest from there... sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce,  setting the table, Christmas music in the air, dressing, gravy and on and on. John, Amy and girls came over with the rest of the meal, and our sparkling cider...yes it was a great day! The only thing that could have made it better would have been if Brad and Krystal and our other family could have been with us!
One of our Thanksgiving traditions is ...after we all sat down and before the prayer, we always go around the table and everyone mentions something that they are grateful for... it always does my heart good to listen to how thankful my family is for soooo many things. At the end we asked Angie what she was thankful for, not sure if she understood or not, so Amy re-worded it. She said " Angie, what makes you happy?"  Her sweet response, without any hesitation was " My Heavenly Father". Yes, out of the mouths of babes!

We received a Thanksgiving email from some dear friends of ours, who just recently battled with cancer. Part of my friend's email  was to her kids and one thing that stuck me the most, was this part of her letter.

"While I cannot remember such a physically painful challenge as the cancer in my life, I have also never felt so close to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, and appreciated the Atonement.  I would not exchange the experience for what I have learned and for how I have been blessed to see life through different eyes, and with a different heart.  I hope you can be grateful for that for me.
And I hope that you are feeling the Lord's love for you, too, as you draw close to Him in your decisions, choices.  I know He is there for you, just as he has been there and continues to be there for me.  I hope you will remember that your mother trusted God and He never let her down!  And that she has faith and trusts that He is as mindful of you as He is her… "

I think the reason this hit home to me, is because that is exactly how I have felt, and exactly what I have tried to teach my children, through my whole cancer experience. I believe Mothers, think an awful lot alike.
So tonight I sit here and realize that my eyes and heart have been changed too, for the better! And for that I am very grateful. I am also grateful for each one of you, and pray that you were able to find something to be thankful for, on this wonderful Thanksgiving Day!
Love, The Woodards

Let it Snow, let it Snow, let it Snow!

Today was a fun day. It began snowing early on this morning and the predictions were that a storm was coming. Now for Washington, we don't usually have to worry about snow storms but, still it was looking a bit foreboding. I called Amy and the girls, and asked if they wanted to come over. They did and so we just had a snow day, it was so much fun, we made pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving, we made soup and hot chocolate... when we came back in, from playing in the snow. We also made Christmas gifts and even made a Christmas twill skirts too!

Tonight we are doing a sleep over, Angie is sleeping in the Secret Bed and soooo excited. Jenny is in her crib, in Lauren's room, so everyone is in safe and sound for the night.

Our family in Utah and Idaho think it's funny, when we tell them that school is canceled tomorrow because we have freezing weather and 3 -1/2 inches of snow! For them a foot or two of snow, is the only time things slow them down...but not here! Tomorrow isn't suppose to get above freezing, and so it looks like we get another family snow day! We love these days, just wish that Brad and Krystal were here to share in the fun! We really are missing them!

(This is Angie's first snow)

So I am thankful today for....

Snow...and how beautiful and clean it makes everything look.
Family...and the chance to be together and have fun ( and the fact that we liked to be together is no small thing!)
Shelter...almost 5 years ago, we had a terrible storm and it left us without electricity for 7 days, we now have a gas fireplace and so no matter what... we will be able to stay in our home and at least keep warm. I know there are many people who don't have even that.
Food...glad that we have our food storage and enough for not only us, but others who may need it.
Health...for this moment in our lives, we are all pretty healthy. That is no small thing in our house!
Friends...what a sad place our world would be without so many dear friends. Thank you for being in our lives!
