Free Lunch vs A New Friend

I just had lunch last week with a friend, that I made on a airplane ride last summer. So I totally could relate to this article by Jason. I love making new friends and I always wondered if I am not outgoing and happy...could I have missed the opportunity to make a new friend.
I need to run, I am packing and getting ready to go to our daughter Lauren' s Graduation. Wow, how did she grow up so fast?
Good night dear friends!
P.S. Keep your fingers crossed that I make a new friend on the plane ride tomorrow! :)

Restaurant Regret: How I blew the choice between free lunch and a friend

14-Jason Wright-Brandon Shane Warren-18A few days ago I had lunch with a buddy at a local restaurant. The food was fine, sure, but this is a friend who makes the menu irrelevant.
He’s the kind of guy who makes you laugh so hard you’re snorting Sprite and spitting chip shards before the entrees even arrive.
About halfway through lunch, we noticed an older gentleman being seated directly across from us. It was obvious it would be a table for one.
My pal and I said hello and complimented him on his unusual hat. Then he launched into a description of it, and we listened politely until we could return to our own discussion.
Even as our attention turned back to our own stories and laughter, it was impossible not to notice how slowly the man ate. It was as if he had nowhere to go and no one to go home to.
When our server cashed us out, we asked if we could also pay the gentleman’s bill. After all, who doesn’t like a free lunch?
As we waited for the server to return, we imagined all sorts of things about the man. Maybe he’s on a fixed income? Maybe this is a rare lunch out?
A moment later we gathered our things and slipped out. My friend had errands to run and I had plenty of work to do. But didn’t we feel so good about ourselves! We’d bought lunch for an old man.
Soon I was back at my desk and my hands went on to other projects, but I couldn’t keep my mind from wandering back to the restaurant. I had the unmistakable sense that we’d taken the easy way out.
At the time, sacrificing $12 for his lunch and a tip seemed the least we could do. I’m afraid we were right – it was the least we could do.
It’s certainly possible the man was grateful for the meal and that our very small gift allowed him to treat himself out again another day.
It’s also possible that he likes to eat alone and that his trip to the restaurant was a much-needed break from caring for someone else or worrying about one of the thousand things that adds stress to the life of many seniors.
But what if?
What if he awoke that morning and decided to take himself to lunch in hopes of having some conversation?
What if he had a story to share, a lesson to teach or a memory to paint that just might have been a blessing for all three of us?
What if the least of his concerns was the gift of money, when what he really prayed for was the gift of time?
Maybe if I spent less time patting myself on the back for giving someone a free lunch, I’d have more time to extend that same hand to make a new friend.
Of course, it’s conceivable if we’d asked to join him or invited him to our table, he might have politely declined. But we’ll never know, because we were too absorbed to even ask the question.
Lesson learned.
You can be sure I plan to visit that restaurant again. When I do, I sure hope to run into that man and his fancy hat.
Maybe I’ll offer to buy his lunch. But trust me, if I do, it won’t be from across the restaurant.

Do I hold myself back?

Have you ever felt sometimes that the only thing that holds you back is yourself? I had an experience like that today. I was offered a great opportunity, and all I could think about was about my inadequacies and limitations.  But then as I talked to my family about this privilege, they were excited for me and complimented me on strengths and no one mentioned any of my limitations. I realized then, that I am the only one holding myself back. Wow, even at the ripe age of 51...I have a lot to learn!  Good night dear friends!

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.
You're on your own.
And you know what you know.
You are the guy who'll decide where to go.

Life

When I was at the specialist's office the other day, one question that he asked me stuck out in my mind. He asked..How is your state of mind ? How do you handle all that you are struggling with, pain and challenges? My answer was simple... because I am a Mother, I can't quit or give up. My family and friends are watching to see how I handle each situation, I can't quit. I need to keep going. Not sure exactly what he was looking for but...it was a sweet reminder to me that LIFE Is important and it is vital that try to learn, grow and truly live each day!

Life is a game, play it.
Life is a promise, fulfill it.
Life is sorrow, overcome it.
Life is a song, sing it.
Life is a struggle, accept it.
Life is a tragedy, confront it.
Life is an adventure, dare it.

There are many angels among us

Today I was a bit discouraged to say the least. I am struggling with cold symptoms AGAIN and my breathing is labored AGAIN. It is interesting to me, that when I can't get any air like today, my whole body is so tired and weak that I literally have to force myself to get dressed, eat or do almost anything. Jeff and my granddaughter came down with bad colds on Monday night. I didn't get as sick as they did but, I could definitely tell that I was re-exposed to something. I went to PT yesterday because I need to get my knees back in shape. I haven't done anything physical for almost a month because of my  pneumonia. Physical Therapy was a grueling to say the least!I kept telling myself to just push THROUGH THE WALL and keep going ( I do realize that doing that actually isn't a good idea ). I kept telling myself that I will not be sick again. I haven't even been well full week yet. But I realized by last night when I was up and down coughing so much, that I was in trouble again. So today was one of those BIGGER THAN ME days. I kept asking myself "will my immune system ever be strong again?" How much more of life will I have to miss?  Jeff is really sick and so I am trying to keep my complaining and whining to myself, poor guy...he doesn't need to hear that his wife is sick yet AGAIN!

So I did a lot of reading today, that doesn't take too much energy. I read a story from the book A 2nd Helping of CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL, the story was by a woman named  Dottie Walters and it was called Angels Never Say "Hello!" here is the link if you want to read it.

I loved this story for a couple of reasons, one is that I do believe there are many angels among us. My worry is that we are so busy, rushed or worried that we miss them. Another thing that touched me about this story... is Dottie was talking about something her grandmother had taught her, that stayed with her all her life. I too learned many lessons from my grandmother and now that I am a grandmother, I realized the importance of my role in my grandchildren's lives. The story is about her grandmother, herself and her daughter. As I looked up more about the author and the daughter, I was amazed (but not surprised) that she too was an incredible lady and has gone on to be an inspiration to many. What a neat legacy each of them has received and now passed down from generation to generation.

I wanted to share with you their story because it was so inspirational and yet again, someone else's story gave me the boost that I needed to get up and stop feeling sorry for myself. I hope that you read more about Dottie and her daughter Lilly, two more real live angels who are making a difference!

This is the quote that was written at the beginning of the Chicken Soup for the Soul book, how appropriate.

"The stories people tell have a way of taking care of them. If stories come to you, care for them. And learn to give them away where they are needed. Sometimes a person needs a story more than food to stay alive. That is why we put these stories in each other's memory. This is how people care for themselves."               ~ Barry Lopez

I love stories, maybe because I love to read about other's lives and their experiences. I love the parables in the scriptures too because they, like any other stories ...tend to be simple and very profound. So if you have a minute, read this sweet one that gave me the shot in the arm that I needed today!

Live your life from your heart. Share from your heart. And your story will touch and heal people's souls.”             ~ Melody Beattie
