What is Pride?

Today I got to teach in church. I always love preparing to teach, because in the process of studying for the lesson or talk... I learn sooo much!
I felt like this was a tough lesson, because there was sooo much to it and so I tried to come up in a way to make it something that everyone could understand and something that applied to their lives.

I started out with some of these quotes by Ezra Taft Benson, he was the United States Secretary of Agriculture and he was a prophet of God. Those who knew him said that he was a very humble man and did not allow the applause of the world or the harsh criticism ring in his ears. Instead, he was true to a reminder he frequently received from his wife, Flora: " Don't worry about the world's opinion of you as long as you're right with the Lord. "

"Pride does not look up to God and care about what is right. It looks sideways to man and argues who is right...

"Pride is characterized by "What do I want out of life? rather than by 'What would God have me do with my life? ' It is self-will as opposed to God's will. It is the fear of man over the fear of God.

" Humility responds to God's will- to the fear of His judgements and to the needs of those around us. To the proud, the applause of the world rings in their ears; to the humble, the applause of heaven warms their hearts. "

In the scriptures we read over and over about the warning of Pride.
Pride is a very misunderstood sin, and many are sinning in ignorance. The lesson goes on to say that most of us think of pride as self-centeredness, conceit, boastfulness, arragance, or haughtiness. All of these are elements of the sin,, but the heart, or core, is still missing.
Pride is competitive in nature. The proud cannot accept the authority of God giving direction to their lives. They pit their perceptions of truth against God's great knowledge, their abilities versus God's priesthood power, their accomplishments against His might works. Many times the proud... wish God would agree with them. They aren't interested in changing their opinions to agree with God's.

The proud make every man their adversary by pitting their intellects, opinions, works, wealth, talents, or any other worldly measuring device against others. In the words of C. S. Lewis: " Pride gets no pleasure out of having something, only out of having more of it than the next man...It is the comparison that makes you proud: the pleasure of being above the rest. Once the element of competition has gone, pride has gone."

I also compared Pride like an Octopus... I am always trying to think of visual ways to teach my lessons ( guess you can tell that I am used to teaching kids ). When I studied up on the Octopus, I thouht how fitting. Here is what I found when studying how an Octopus captures its prey.
- First of all they are very intelligent
-Then do not have an external or internal skeleton, therefore they can squeeze in small places to hide and protect themselves from their predators.
-They use their many armms to catch and ensnare their prey.
-They can spray ink out of their bodies, clouding the waters so that they either attack their prey or to get away from danger.
-They are fast.
-They have poisionus saliva and with one bite, can seriously injure or kill their prey
- They can camouflage themselves, so that they can sneak up on their prey or hide from their predators.

I thought Pride is a lot like an Octopus, many times people with knowledge and wealth often forget about being humble and teachable. As you look at this Octopus and all the things that are considered prideful by the Lord, then you can also see that like the ink that the Octopus sprays to cloud the waters, the world tries to cloud the issues or the facts so as to ensnare us to have less choices. The world tries to make it seem as if the Commandments are optional!  Or we have to do it just because everyone else is... Like his poisonous saliva, there are many prideful things out in the world that are poisonious to our souls, if we let them take ahold of our lives and our families. And like the octopus can camouflage itself, so can bad things of the world, try to disguise it's self as something good. And last but not least, like the many arms of the octopus that can catch and ensare their prey. There are many things out there that tempt us to be prideful in. Things that can harm us physically, emotionally and spiritually!

I also shared this poem, it was a great way to remind us that we are all human, and do sometimes make mistakes and make judgements about others.

The Cookie Thief A woman was waiting at the airport one night,
With several long hours before her flight.
She hunted for a book in the airport shop,
Bought a bag of cookies and found a place to drop.
She was engrossed in her book, but happened to see,
That the man beside her, as bold as could be,
Grabbed a cookie or two from the bag between,
Which she tried to ignore to avoid a scene.
She read, munched cookie, and watched the clock,
As the gutsy “cookie thief” diminished her stock.
She was getting more irritated as the minutes ticked by,
Thinking, “If I wasn’t so nice, I’d blacken his eye!”
With each cookie she took, he took one too.
When only one was left, she wondered what he’d do.
With a smile on his face and a nervous laugh,
He took the last cookie and broke it in half.
He offered her half, and he ate the other.
She snatched it from him and thought, “Oh brother,
This guy has some nerve, and he’s also so rude,
Why, he didn’t even show any gratitude!”
She had never known when she had been so galled,
And sighed with relief when her flight was called.
She gathered her belongings and headed for the gate,
Refusing to look at the “thieving ingrate”.
She boarded the plane and sank in her seat,
Then sought her book, which was almost complete.
As she reached in her baggage, she gasped with surprise.
There were her bag of cookies in front of her eyes!
“If mine are here,” she moaned with despair,
“Then the others were his and he tried to share!”
Too late to apologize, she realized with grief,
That she was the rude one, the ingrate, the thief!!!

Then near the end we talked about the Antidote for Pride ...which is HUMILITY!
If we are humble, meek, submissive and come to the Lord with a broken heart and a contrite spirit then we will be more teachable. Rudyard Kipling put it well:
The tumult  and the shouting dies;
The captains and the kings depart.
Still stands thine ancient sacrifice,
An humble and contrite heart.
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget, lest we forget....

We can choose to be humble, obedient, forgiving, serve others and obeying God!

There was a ton more about my lesson and if you want you can read the rest of it HERE:
Hope you all had a wonderful Sabbath.
Good Night dear friends!

20/20 vision

We listened, as probably much of the world did last night as our President Obama announced the death of Osama bin Laden. As we watched the excitement around the world, we realized how many years we all have been waiting for this day. We also listened to the phone interviews with many of the people who lost family members in the Sept. 11th attack. It was interesting to hear how some were still angry, some excited and some... a mixture of both.

Many of the kids that were celebrating at the White House were young adults, who at the time of Sept. 11th were only probably around 9-10 years old. Still their whole life they have been watching the world look for Osama bin Laden. I liked seeing the ones who were holding up the American Flag and singing songs, much better than the kids that were just screaming and jumping around in front of the camera.

We have a nephew in the service right now, and we were grateful to hear that there were no American soldiers were hurt during this attack. I thought as I listened and watched last night, how different everyone's view on this whole thing was. When you have children or loved ones that are serving in the Military, every day you are concerned and watching the news. And yet to others who aren't as involved, it seems a world away at times.
I do think we need to daily pray and think about all those who defend and protect our country. Each day they are putting their lives at risk ...to save ours!

I also believe the only way we are going to have 20/20 vision on this subject, is if we never take for granted our freedom and liberty!

I pray we will continue to have more success. God Bless America!

Happy 4th of July!

angie 4th of july walking away

Well, the 4th of July is coming to a close, but I can sill hear a few fireworks going off outside. And although this wonderful holiday is almost over, may we never forget the freedom we enjoy. May we pray daily for the men and women who fight for our freedom, and their dear families that sacrifice too!

ITS THAT TIME OF YEAR
It's that time of the year
for the red white and blue
They stand for freedom
in all you say and do
Show off those colors
for all the world to see
Fly them proudly over
the air the land and sea
We celebrate the birth
of our blessed country
It surely is indeed
the land of the free
HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!

I promise you!

I have been talking to a lot of people lately, who are sad about choices that their kids have made. I do believe as a mom that is one of the hardest things to watch. It doesn't seem to matter what age they are, it still hurts a parent to see their child suffer physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually. I was sewing tonight and listening to Delilah on the radio. Even though she is a radio disc jockey, she sure seems to be a lot more than that. She is a voice of reason, voice of compassion and a voice of "been there, done that...don't follow my bad example." She counsels people in their lives and she isn't afraid to tell it like it is, of course they call her for the advice.  She is honest but loving, and is not afraid to acknowledge God and everyone's need for Him in their lives. I don't know her personally, but I have to admit ...I do believe she is trying to do a lot of good in the world and I could only hope to have that much impact for good.

Tonight she got a call from a young teenager, who wanted a song dedicated to her mom. Her mom jumped into a 2nd marriage without knowing the guy, he turned out not to be what he said he was, and now because of the divorce and the financial burden...they are going to lose their home. The home that she was born in. I personally thought it took a lot for that girl to call and dedicate that song to her mom and to tell her that she loved her very much and together they would make it through this trial. That daughter seemed wise beyond her young years, it seemed that she could have had good reason to be bitter or angry.

So just as hard as it it for us parents to watch our kids make mistakes, I know there are times that our kids look at us and question why we make some of the mistakes we do? Habits and pride seem to have a lot to do with it. The bad type of PRIDE, the one that has to always be right, the one that is defensive, the one that is controlling. Yes, PRIDE can be a terrible thing. Habits are just what the dictionary says... AN ACQUIRED BEHAVIOR PATTERN REGULARLY FOLLOWED UNTIL IT HAS BECOME ALMOST INVOLUNTARY.  CUSTOMARY PRACTICE. A DOMINANT OR REGULAR DISPOSITION OR TENDENCY; PREVAILING CHARACTER OR QUALITY.

We all come from different backgrounds and life's experiences, and that usually is what we bring into our families. The bad part is ....if it is toxic, harmful and dangerous, we have no business carrying it on to the next generation. I remember well the first day that Jeff went back to work when Amy was born ( our oldest ), my first thought was..."don't live me alone with her, I don't know how to be a mother, there were no instructions that came out with her"...yes, I was terrified when I looked at her and felt the full weight of my responsibility as her mom. It didn't take long to realize what baggage I had carried from my past and that it was threatening to ruin Amy's life. I had come from Abuse and I was scared of everything and everybody. How could I ever go any where with her, what if some one tried to take her or hurt her? Yes, I was a bag of nerves and quickly fell into a deep depression. A few months later I confessed my mental state to Jeff, and together we went to counseling.

I am the first to say that it was the hardest thing I ever did, to face my past and deal with it. But honestly every time I looked into Amy's eyes...I got a renewed strength and determination to give her the safest and best life a girl could have. I found a fight in me that has continued for over 27 years, I would protect my kids and family with my life. However, there is this thing called AGENCY and that is something even a mother... can't control. We can only be the best example to them and then pray like mad, that they will not have to learn too many things the hard way.

Another song that came on tonight made me think of this very subject. I will leave the words with you. I really don't know anything about the artist, but I did love the words and I would sing  them to each of my kids, my nieces, nephews, granddaughters, friends and everyone else I love....if I could.

I pray that each of us will look at our lives and the lives around us that we are effecting, and honestly ask ourselves... are there habits in my life that are unhealthy? Am I happy? Do I love myself? Do I take offense easily? Am I living the type of life that my kids would be proud of and would be safe to follow? Do I have anger that needs to be addressed? Can I look in the mirror and say I am proud of what I see and that I am doing all that can to be my best ...or could I do more and am I willing to CHANGE?

Look into  your sweet children's eyes ( no matter how old they are ) and recommit yourself to try a little harder, forgive a little more and to work hard at overcoming habits that are toxic for you and your family. I promise you it will be worth it!  They deserve it and you deserve it!

"COURAGE IS SIMPLY THE WILLINGNESS TO BE AFRAID AND ACT ANYWAY." ~ Dr. Robert Anthony

Yes, when you're feeling lost in the night
When you feel your world just ain't right
Call on me, I will be waiting
Count on me, I will be there
Anytime the times get too tough
Anytime your best ain't enough
I'll be the one to make it better
I'll be there to protect you, see you through
I'll be there, and there is nothing, I won't do
I will cross the ocean for you
I will go and bring you the moon
I will be your hero, your strength, anything you need
I will be the sun in your sky
I will light your way for all time, promise you
For you I will, yes yeah, yeah
I will shield your heart from the rain
I won't let no harm come your way
Oh, these arms will be your shelter
No, these arms won't let you down
If there is a mountain to move
I will move that mountain for you
I'm here for you, I'm here forever
I will be your fortress tall and strong
I'll keep you safe, I'll stand beside you right or wrong

Lay my life on the line, for you I will fight, oh
For you I will die, with every breath, with all my soul
I'll give my word, I'll give it all
Put your faith in me, put your faith in me
And I'll do anything...oh...
I will... oh...
